The Rapid Response Taskforce (RRT) underscores the urgent need for attention to the challenges currently affecting press and artistic freedom in Bangladesh. Reports from October 2024 to February 2025 document 52 incidents that reveal troubling trends impacting online and offline civic and cultural spaces. These incidents, which encompass attacks on journalists, arbitrary detentions, and restrictions on cultural events, highlight the necessity for a concerted effort to enhance the protection of fundamental freedoms.
The unfortunate case of journalist Swapan Bhadra from Daily Swajan exemplifies the hazards of reporting on critical issues such as corruption and crime. It is imperative to address the issue of politically motivated arrests, as demonstrated by the situation involving Daily Samakal journalist Pradip Chowdhury, to cultivate a conducive environment for journalists. Furthermore, incidents of violence against reporters, such as the assault on Shahidul Islam from the Daily Star, demand accountability to ensure a safer atmosphere for those in the profession.
Judicial actions should also be prioritized to bolster press freedom. The experiences of Daily Jugantor highlight the urgency for a supportive legal framework that allows for responsible journalism without the fear of reprisal. The mass revocation of press accreditation for 167 journalists, as well as the scrutiny of the financial accounts of others, underscores the need for transparent practices that empower rather than hinder, journalistic endeavors. The closure of Daily Bhorer Kagoj serves as a wake-up call to reinforce the sustainability of media outlets and acknowledge their essential role in society.
The proposed Cyber Safety Ordinance can enhance free expression if developed with adequate judicial oversight and stakeholder engagement. A collaborative approach to its formulation is encouraged to ensure that it safeguards dissenting voices rather than suppresses them. While the repeal of the Cyber Security Act and media reforms represent positive developments, sustained dialogue remains crucial to prevent the unfair targeting of individuals, such as Professor Rakhal Raha and Activist Academic Nahid Hasan, which contradicts the objectives of promoting media freedom.
Cultural expressions warrant both protection and encouragement. Recent pressures, including canceling a women’s football tournament and disruptions to cultural celebrations in various cities, indicate a growing need for tolerance and support for diverse forms of expression. Engaging with community groups to foster discussions around cultural events can promote understanding and acceptance.
Upholding the fundamental rights to life, security, freedom of expression, assembly, and association is vital to safeguarding the rule of law. The RRT advocates for establishing long-term protections for journalists, activists, human rights defenders, and cultural figures, creating a safe and inclusive environment for all. Committed to defending digital and civic spaces in Bangladesh, the RRT promotes free expression and access to information while championing fundamental human rights.
Together, we can strive towards a future where freedom of expression flourishes, contributing to the enrichment of society.
