Govt urged to devise mechanism to measure progress

Speakers at a seminar urged the government on Saturday to undertake a mechanism to measure the progress towards sustainable development goals (SDGs), their targets and means of implementation.

They also asked the policymakers to introduce a national sustainable development strategy through a participatory process.

"A comprehensive and participatory national review mechanism that will be representative including the members of the legislation helps build national capacity to measure the results," they said.

The seminar on 'Accountability, Monitoring and Review Framework on Post 2015 Agenda' was held at the auditorium of Mymensingh Municipality. It was attended by a large number of stakeholders including NGOs, academicians, civil society organisations, trade unions, women groups, rights organisations, youth and professional bodies, according to a press statement.

Organised by VOICE, a rights-based organisation and Beyond 2015, the seminar was presided over by President of Zilla Mohila Parishad Ferdous Ara Mahmuda Helen.

Presenting a keynote paper, VOICE senior coordinator Golam Rahmany said that the universal nature of the post-2015 agenda demands global action, coordination and an accountability mechanism at all levels.

The framework must be rights-based to ensure justice and equality for all, and in the accountability process everyone including the marginalised communities should get equal opportunities in the process.

The structure must be gender sensitive to ensure that progress on gender equality and women's human rights is measured from the perspective of women, the keynote paper said.

Vice-chair of Ainjibi Samity Advocate Emdadul Haque Millat, General Secretary of Mymensingh Sahitya Sangsad Yazdani Quraishy, Advocate Shibbir Ahmed Liton and Nilhar Likhon, also spoke in the meeting as panellists.

The United Nations initiated the process engaging key stakeholders to contribute to the Post-Development Framework as the MDGs will come to an end in 2015.
