On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, VOICE, a leading civil society organization in Bangladesh dedicated to human rights, environmental justice, etc. emphasizes the indispensable role of journalists in shedding light on critical issues impacting our planet.
In a world grappling with climate change and biodiversity loss, the voices of countless individuals facing turmoil and grief often go unheard. Their stories, though at times challenging, are essential for driving awareness and catalyzing change for sustainable environment. It is through the courageous and persevering work of media that these narratives reach global audiences, fostering understanding and inspiring action.
Ahmed Swapan Mahmud, Executive Director of VOICE stated that, “on this World Press Freedom Day, VOICE acknowledges the invaluable contributions of journalists who operate on the frontlines of the collective struggle for a sustainable future. Despite facing risks and challenges, they continue to illuminate the pressing issues affecting our planet and its inhabitants, e.g., climate change, disrupted biodiversity, environmental pollution, hazards caused by technology, etc. VOICE has long-standing experience in working with journalists in promoting and defending their digital safety to carry out investigative journalism. Through advocacy, research, and capacity-building initiatives, VOICE has contributed in advancing democratic principles and ensure the protection of fundamental freedoms for all individuals.”
To amplify the significance of journalists’ work, this year, UNESCO has launched the ‘This Story Must Be Told’ campaign. The initiative spotlights the tireless efforts of journalists including photojournalists in uncovering stories that deserve to be shared with the world.
While Bangladesh celebrates World Press Freedom Day 2024, the dedication and courage of journalists and media outlets should be recognized and honored. Their commitments towards justice and accountability are instrumental in shaping a better tomorrow for all.
